KATE PORTER SILVER

Every stylish woman needs a basic jewellery wardrobe. Kate Porter intends that a woman should settle for nothing less than beauty in the jewellery she wears, even when putting a single silver piece to both day and evening purposes. Picture, for example, the elegant "Ada" pendant adding interest to a turtleneck sweater worn under a business suit. Let the sweater be removed for an evening event and the pendant, worn against skin, transmutes the polish of the daytime look to a womanly lustre.

This season's line highlights that classic, the silver chain. "When I was studying silversmithing," says Kate, "I found the project of making a chain so satisfying that I managed to give my instructor no fewer than four to evaluate. She laughed, 'I think, Kate, that you have mastered chains.'

Meditative craft

"I went on to make many art pieces but have returned to this early love, so this year I am offering six different chains. Every chain, including each jump ring, is handcrafted."

Contagious contentment?

"I don't know exactly why I like chain making, but I think rhythm plays a part. I find the repetition soothing; the process becomes meditative. I hope my contentment as I make my chains will be felt by the women who wear them."
