HISTORY
Art galleries, jewellery stores, and accessory boutiques have snapped up Kate Porter's elegant contemporary jewellery since her first show in 2001. Store buyers recognized its appeal to women who like distinctive designs they can wear every day. Now, there are proud retailers of Kate Porter lines in two territories and in every province other than Newfoundland.
BIOGRAPHY
Kate holds a Master's degree from McMaster University. She spent 20 years teaching college before she took up jewellery design. Night-school courses captured her imagination, and private study with a goldsmith followed.
During a 1993 ceremony in a sweat lodge, Kate was identified as being a member of the Hummingbird clan. At the time, she was fascinated by First Nations art and culture. However, it was only when meeting a cousin for the first time in 2004 that she learned about the Cree ancestry of their grandmother.
The hummingbird is a messenger of joy and beauty. The symbol is now Kate's jewellery stamp and the registered trademark of her line.
